DR. VINCENT LUCIDO PROVIDES FCER UPDATE TO THE ACADEMY
 Dr. Vincent P. Lucido is a member of the Academy Council of the American Academy of Spine Physicians. He also serves as President of the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research. The following represents his update on the FCER for the AASP.
Despite the economic doldrums affecting the country, and more specifically health providers, the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) has managed to hold fast to its mandate to promote the health and well-being of humanity by encouraging and supporting research and education relative to the field of chiropractic care, and to provide information needed to document and improve chiropractic health care capacity worldwide.
Some of the current research funded by the FCER is related to disc manometry during spinal manipulation, and development of evaluation of a reversible small animal model of chiropractic subluxation, morphometry of the lumbar spine by means of computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.
FCER is an autonomous non-profit foundation. It had its beginnings as a result of the leadership of the American Chiropractic Association. There are still strong ties to this organization, and FCER receives ongoing funding from the ACA.
Any profession that deals with the care of the human body needs to have a body of literature that scientifically documents the efficacy, safety, and reproducibility of its premises and methods. The chiropractic profession is unique, because for many years public funding of its research was non-existent. So the profession had to fund its own research by means of donations from its members and friends. The FCER became the vehicle for overseeing these efforts. They have been modest, but since 1980, FCER has administered research grants and awarded fellowships and residencies in excess of ten million dollars.
