The AASP reviewed the application of Kevin McCowan and granted Candidate Membership with the Academy. The AASP is a prestigious organization comprised of healthcare professionals committed to excellence in spinecare and committed to improving the quality of spinecare through cooperative and conservative efforts.
The primary mission of the AASP is to improve the quality of spinecare through education. The primary objectives of the AASP are to facilitate a cooperative approach to spinecare, provide continuing education and credentialing for spinecare professionals and to help shape the future of spinecare Back pain represents one of the most common disorders encountered in healthcare practice. It often ranks as one of the top reasons for employee absenteeism and afflicts approximately eight of every ten Americans during their lifetime. The AASP is preparing its members to meet these growing concerns at all levels."
Cooperative efforts between spinecare professionals of various disciplines will promote early detection, timely intervention and improved continuity of care. Additionally, a broadened scope of preventative, rehabilitative and minimally invasive approaches will reduce the impact of spine-related disability.
The AASP is member driven organization, guided by an interdisciplinary board of directors and an Academy Council composed of distinguished spine physicians throughout the country.

Durrant, D.C., PhD(c) chiropractic neurologist, Chicago Neuroscience Institute; Barth A. Green, M.D., neurosurgeon and President of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis; Vincent Lucido, D.C., chiropractic orthopedist, Past President of the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) and Past President of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA); Stephen L. Ondra, M.D., neurosurgeon, formerly Northwestern University; John V. Prunskis, M.D., anesthesiologist and pain management specialist, Illinois Pain Institute; Ruth G. Ramsey M.D., neuroradiologist, formerly Rush University and University of Chicago; and Steve Vanni, D.O., D.C., neurosurgeon and chiropractic physician, University of Miami Medical Center.

Expand and Educate Your Spinecare Network
 Welcome to the Inform a Colleague area of the Academy Website. The American Academy of Spine Physicians (AASP) strives to implement new and more efficient methods for members to communicate with other healthcare professionals. One of the most effective tools is the online "Inform a Colleague" function. This function can be used to expand and educate your spinecare referral network. It also represents a resource to conveniently inform others about trends in spinecare and about offers of organizations such as the American Academy of Spine Physicians (AASP), the International Spine Association (ISA). The link library also contains an application for membership with the AASP.
The online "Inform a Colleague" feature provides an invaluable time-saving service for keeping spinecare professionalsup-to-date, expanding the spinecare network, stimulating interdisciplinary referrals and for inviting colleagues to join the AASP. Member:
This level of membership is for physicians (MD, DC, DO) whose practice/interest includes patients with spinal disorders. ($250)
Affiliate Member:
This level of membership is for allied healthcare professionals involved in spinecare and/or spine research. This includes physical therapists, massage therapists, exercise physiologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician's assistants, diagnostic technicians, surgical technicians, exercise instructors, personal trainers and individuals who hold a PhD and work in the field of spinecare. ($150)
Candidate Member:
This level of membership is for residents, fellows and students who have an interest in spinecare. ($35)
Membership Renewal
Membership will automatically renew each calendar year starting from the date of membership renewal or membership acceptance unless the AASP is specifically notified in writing by the member at least 30 days prior to their renewal date. Please address all correspondence to the AASP Office of Member Services.
