NEURO SPINAL SURGEONS MEETING

A meeting of neuro spinal surgeons from around the world was held 2-5 September 2013 in Mumbai/Pune, India. A highlight was the discussion of long-term follow-up of various operations for lateral lumbar disc herniation. After failing conservative management, the patients had operative procedures performed. Various operative procedures (classical operation-laminectomy/discectomy; microdiscectomy; endoscopic microdiscectomy) performed in several thousand patients had the same results. None of the operative procedures showed improved results relative to one another long-term. A preliminary report summarizing these findings was published this year by members of the AASP in the Journal of Spine Surgery.
